Project Venus: A Collaborative Effort to Empower Female Students

Bamise Adeseun

In a world where access to sexual and reproductive health education is crucial for the well-being of young women, OneHealthNG, in collaboration with Healthconnect247, took a significant step forward. Through the “Project Venus Outreach” initiative, they provided essential education, wellness checks, and free medical consultations, to over 200 female students at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka in Lagos.

The Challenge

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education remains a sensitive yet vital topic, especially for young women in underserved communities. In Lagos, many female students face numerous challenges due to a lack of access to reliable information, proper healthcare, and essential sanitary products. These challenges often lead to misconceptions, risky behaviors, and a higher incidence of health issues, affecting their overall well-being and academic performance.

The Solution

Recognizing the urgent need to address these challenges, OneHealth.NG partnered with Healthconnect247 to launch the “Project Venus Outreach” initiative. The goal was to create a comprehensive program that would not only educate female students about their sexual and reproductive health but also provide them with the necessary resources to take control of their well-being.

The initiative provided interactive SRH education workshop that covered essential topics such as puberty, menstrual health, contraception and sexual consent. As part of the outreach, students received free wellness checks, including general health screenings and consultations. This initiative aimed to identify and address any underlying health issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. Open and honest conversations with healthcare professionals to address questions and concerns were also had. Additionally, the outreach included the distribution of free contraceptives and sanitary pads, directly addressing the barriers to access and helping young women manage their health with dignity and confidence.

The Result

Empowered ladies, ready to conquer the world, with a newfound self-awareness about their bodies.

The female students at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka were equipped with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. This initiative not only boosted their confidence but also prepared them to face the future with strength, dignity, and a clear understanding of their own well-being.

“It was nice and educative! I learnt about different methods to prevent unwanted pregnancy. The doctor that attended to me was able to explain better for me to understand all about sex education. I rate the experience 4 of 5!” Margaret Annabelle added.

Breaking Stigmas and Fostering Support: This initiative also helped break down the stigma surrounding discussions about sexual health, fostering a more open and supportive environment where young women can seek information and support without fear or shame.

The partnership between HealthConnec247 and OneHealth.ng in the “Project Venus Outreach” initiative demonstrated the power of collaboration in addressing critical health challenges in society. The success of this outreach serves as a blueprint for similar programs in other communities, highlighting the importance of education, accessibility, and community engagement in promoting health and well-being.
