Understanding Food Poisoning

Food poisoning, also called food borne illness, is an illness caused by eating contaminated food. Infectious organisms including bacteria, viruses and parasites or their toxins are the most common causes of food poisoning. Infectious organisms or their toxins can contaminate food at any point of processing or production. Contamination can also occur at home if food is incorrectly handled or cooked. Symptoms Food poisoning symptoms vary with the source of contamination. Most types of food poisoning cause one or more of the following signs and symptoms: Nausea, Vomiting, Watery or Bloody Diarrhea, Abdominal Pain, Cramps and Fever. Signs and symptoms may start within hours after eating the contaminated food, or they may begin days or even weeks later. Sickness caused by food poisoning generally lasts from a few hours to several days. Do You Know? Food contamination can happen at any point of production: harvesting, growing, processing, storing, shipping or preparing. The cross-contamination transfer of harmful organisms from one surface to another is often the cause. Prevention To prevent food poisoning at home: Wash your hands, utensils and food surfaces often.Wash your hands well with warm, soapy water before and after handling or preparing food. Use hot, soapy water to wash utensils, cutting boards and other surfaces you use.Refrigerate or freeze perishable foods promptly within two hours of purchasing or preparing them. If the room temperature is above 90 F (32.2 C), refrigerate perishable foods within one hour.Throw it out when in doubt. Food left at room temperature too long may contain bacteria or toxins that can't be destroyed by cooking. Don't taste food that you're unsure about — just throw it out. Even if it looks and smells fine, it may not be safe to eat.

Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in the eye. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60. It can occur at any age but is more common in older adults. For example: Open-Angle Glaucoma Patchy blind spots in the side (peripheral) or central vision, frequently in both eyes Tunnel vision in the advanced stages Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma Severe headache Eye pain Nausea and vomiting Blurred vision Halos around lights Eye redness The damage caused by glaucoma can't be reversed. But treatment and regular checkups can help slow or prevent vision loss, especially if the disease is recognized in its early stages. Glaucoma is treated by lowering the eye pressure (intraocular pressure). Depending on the situation, treatment options may include prescription eye-drops, oral medications, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of any of these Many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs. The effect is so gradual that person may not notice a change in vision until the condition is at an advanced stage. PROTECT EYES AND VISION BY FOLLOWING THESE TIPS Have your eyes checkedControl chronic health conditionsProtect eyes from the SunPrevent eye injuriesEat healthy foodsUse the right glasses Use good lighting Consult a doctor immediately if any of these symptoms are experienced — sudden loss of vision in one eye with or without pain, sudden hazy or blurred vision, double vision, or see flashes of light, black spots or halos around lights. Any of these symptoms may signal a serious medical or eye condition. Try to eat plenty of fruits, leafy greens and other vegetables. These foods generally contain high levels of antioxidants as well as vitamin A and beta carotene. They're also vital to maintaining healthy vision.

Everything You Need to Know About Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are long, narrow streaks, stripes, or lines that run perpendicular to maximum lines of tension in the skin. It is medically known as striae distensae. Stretch marks begin as flat reddish or purple lines on a skin that has been overstretched. The affected areas are soft to touch and appear empty as slightly depressed white streaks over time. They are most likely to appear in places where larger amounts of fat are stored. They tend to occur in places like the abdomen (especially near the navel), breasts, upper arms, underarms, back, thigh (both inner and outer), hips, and buttocks. Common Causes of Stretch marks Stretch marks are caused by stretching of the skin. Pregnancy: Most women experience stretch marks especially during the the last trimester due to the rapid growth of their stomach and/or breasts during pregnancy. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also play a role in additional stretch marks.Weight Gain: Stretch marks occur as a result of rapid weight gain or growth spurts during puberty causing teenage stretch marks. The skin literally does not have enough time to adjust and stretch during these periods of growth, thus causing stretch marks.Weight Training: Those who body build or experience rapid muscle growth may also notice stretch marks due the same reasons mentioned above.Medication Use: Pills, creams, lotions or other medications that contain cortisone or steroids can cause stretch marks.Diseases or Conditions: An adrenal gland diseases can cause stretch marks on the entire body. Example, Cushing's syndrome. Its severity is affected by several factors, including genetic tendency, degree of stress on the skin and cortisone level. Cortisone- a hormone produced by the adrenal glands- weakens elastic fibers in the skin.An increase in cortisone levels can increase the probability of stretch marks by reducing the skin's flexibility.  It does this by affecting the dermis which is the resilient middle tissue layer that helps to keep the skin in shape. High level of cortisone in the dermis prevents the fibroblasts from forming collagen and elastin fibers, necessary to keep rapidly growing skin taut. This can create a lack of supportive material as the skin is stretched, and lead to dermal and epidermal tearing. This tearing, in turn, produces scarring which over time tend to atrophy and lose pigmentation to form stretch marks. No stretch marks will form as long as there is support within the dermis. Stretch marks aren’t painful or harmful, but some people feel distressed about the way it looks. Symptoms Stretch marks don’t all look alike. They vary depending on how long one have had them, what caused them, where they are on the body, and the skin type. Common variations include: Indented streaks or lines in the skinPink, red, blue or purple streaksBright streaks that fade to a lighter colour A streak on the arms, hands, abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks, or thighsStreaks covering large areas of the body. Prevention We have learned what causes stretch marks, it’s time to talk about how to prevent stretch marks. Daily use of lotions or creams will not completely eliminate your chances of getting stretch marks. The surest way to reduce the chances of getting stretch marks is to maintain a healthy weight. Avoid gaining too much by eating well and exercising. This not only minimizes stretch marks but also helps to improve your overall health and lessen your chance of weight gain and stretch marks. Treatment/Solution Treatment can make stretch marks fade, but it won’t completely remove them. Some measures to be taken includes: Adequate intake of Vitamin A: Vitamin A is known as a retinoid. Retinoids make skin appear smoother and more youthful. They’re used in many over-the-counter topical cosmetic creams. A diet rich in foods such as carrots and sweet potatoes can help you increase your vitamin A levels. Use of Aloe Vera: Little clinical evidence exists for aloe vera as a stretch mark cure, pure aloe vera is both a natural healing agent and a skin softener. This makes it an ideal home remedy to try for stretch marks. Apply pure aloe vera from a plant to your stretch marks daily after your shower. Prescription medicine and use of skin care products containing Hyaluronic acid and Tretinoin. In studies, these two ingredients have shown to offer some relief. Collagen is the protein in your skin that helps it to keep its shape and appear healthy. As we age, collagen decreases in our face and our bodies. Collagen production can be be stimulated with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid can be absorbed by consuming a capsule or extract. Use of Clinical treatment such as: Chemical peelLaser therapyMicrodermabrasionRadiofrequencyUltrasoundNeedling Conclusion Stretch marks are not something to worry about. Even though a lot of people tend to worry about it, we believe it is just unfounded fear. Yes, it might affect how you look and cause you to stress out, but in the end, there is nothing much to worry about. You can speak to our doctors from the comfort of your home or office about any issues (both physical or emotional) that you are facing with your stretch marks. 5 Tips to Keep You Healthy This Ramadan

Fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadan can get difficult, especially with the current weather and the stress of living in a fast-paced country like Nigeria. We are very aware of the health implications that can come as a result of fasting under these circumstances, hence why we put together this post. Follow these tips to ensure you have a healthy Ramadan and avoid any health problems. Ramadan Health Tip #1 - Add dates to your menu Our first tip for you is to begin your iftār by eating dates because it provides you with an immediate source of energy. Starting your Iftar by eating two to three dates is highly recommended as it provides the body with sugar, thereby helping restore low blood sugar after fasting all day. This is essential because one of the most common reasons for headaches or dizziness during Ramadan is low blood sugar. This is why eating dates are very beneficial at the start of Iftar. Ramadan Health Tip #2 - Moderation is a virtue Our second tip for you is to try as much as possible to avoid overeating during this Holy Month. Do everything in moderation - including the meals you eat at Iftār and Suḥūr. Hunger can play serious tricks on the human brain. Research has shown that even food-associated words can be prominent to a hungry person. So, it is perfectly normal that after a day of fasting, your appetite might increase. This is where you need to exercise discipline by resisting the urge to overeat to prevent indigestion and weight gain. Ramadan Health Tip #3 - Avoid eating fried, salty, and high-sugar foods Apart from unhealthy weight gain, eating fatty and sugary foods will also cause sluggishness and fatigue. In addition, you should limit your intake of salt, especially during Suḥūr, because this increases thirst which will make your fasting unbearable throughout the day. But overall, it is just unhealthy to consume fatty and sugary food. Ramadan Health Tip #4 - Drink as much water as possible to reduce your risk of dehydration. Reduce your risks of dehydration during this fasting period by drinking as much water as possible between Iftār (dinner) and Suḥūr (pre-dawn meal). It is also advisable for you to cut down on caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, and sodas because they have a diuretic effect on your body and they promote fluid loss. Losing fluids will make you feel dehydrated during the day, which is why it is best to stay off these kinds of drinks. Instead, drink as much water as possible so that your body can retain it and use during the day. Ramadan Health Tip #5 - Eat foods and vegetables that are rich in fibre and protein Our final tip will keep you feeling full for longer during the day, thus reducing the strain of the fasting on your body. High-fibre carbohydrate foods take longer to digest, thereby helping to sustain your energy levels for much longer. This helps reduce the strain of the fasting on your body. Also, fruits, vegetables and meat that are rich in fibres and protein are essentials during fasting as they increase the feeling of fullness and help prevent constipation. They also contain vitamins, and minerals and that are essential for good health. Conclusion In conclusion, Ramadan is a great month to practice self-discipline. In fact, Ramadan fasting is basically an exercise in self-discipline. So, for those who are chain smokers, food nibblers or coffee addicts etc, it is a good opportunity to break that habit, with the hope that the effect will continue even when Ramadan is over. This holy month is the time to practice self-restraint. It is also a time to cleanse the body from impurities and re-focus on being your best self. We implore you to let this Ramadan bring about the changes that will last a lifetime for you. From all of us at HealthConnect 24x7, we wish you Ramadan Kareem! And remember, you can speak to our doctors 24/7 from the comfort of your home or office via our toll-free number on 08000HEALTH (08000432584)

Sweating and Body Odour: Everything You Need to Know

Sweating and body odor are facts of life for most people. Heavy perspiration and body odor can happen during exercise, warm temperature (like we have here in Nigeria), or when one is nervous, anxious or under stress. Two Main Types of Sweat gland Our body has two main types of sweat glands, and they produce two very different types of sweat. Both types are odorless, but the type of sweat produced in armpits and groin smells bad when it combines with bacteria found normally on skin. These two types of sweat glands are eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine is the most numerous type that is found all over the body especially on the palms, soles of the feet, and forehead. Apocrine is mostly the armpits. They end in hair follicles instead of pores. Symptoms As we mentioned, sweating is natural. When it becomes a problem is when it is excessive or you start noticing a foul odour. People are wired differently. Some people naturally sweat more or less than others. Body odor also can vary from person to person. But as a rule of thumb, you should see a doctor if you experience any of the symptoms described below: You suddenly begin to sweat much more or less than usual When sweating disrupts your daily routine You start experiencing night sweats for no apparent reason You notice a change in your body odor You should definitely speak to a doctor if you experience any or all of those symptoms listed above. There could be an underlying health factor that is causing it. So, it is essential to nip it by the bud before it gets out of hand. Conclusion Unusual changes in sweating — either excessive perspiration (hyperhidrosis) or little or no perspiration (anhidrosis) — can be cause for concern. Likewise, changes in body odor may be a sign of a medical problem as we highlighted above. Lifestyle and home treatments can usually manage symptoms caused by normal sweating and body odor effectively. If you are still unsure, it is best to speak to a qualified medical doctor. You can speak to any of our doctors by calling our toll-free number 08000HEALTH (08000432584). Our doctors are available 24/7.
